Exford, an area of upland along the river Exe near the heart of Exmoor, was divided into five manors TRE, Æthelwulf’s being the largest. Even so, it had arable for only two ploughs and was assessed at only ½ virgate. When its Norman holder Roger de Courseulles arrived it was ‘completely waste’ (Exon). The other holdings at Exford also had tiny values in 1086, testimony to the precarious living of Exmoor farmers. Exford is 30 miles from Æthelwulf 51’s manors in Devon and very unlikely to have belonged to him.
