Tonni 4’s estate was at Caldecote, lying between the river Anker and Watling Street in north Warwickshire. DB records that Tonni 4 ‘could not go where he wished with his land’, which implies that he was a dependent tenant; but although his estate passed to the bishop of Chester after the Conquest there is nothing to indicate that the bishopric held Caldecote before the Conquest and Tonni’s TRE lord is unknown.
Despite the extreme rarity of the name Tonni there is no evidence in DB or the later manorial descent of Caldecote to link Tonni 4 with either of the other TRE landholders of that name, and for similar reasons it is unlikely that he can be associated with the Tonni 5 who in 1086 was a subtenant at Bericote, 16 miles from Caldecote.
