The vill of Norton in the upper basin of the Nene in western Northamptonshire belonged in its entirety in 1066 to an Agemund who held freely. The reduced assessment of 2½ hides and a fifth of ½ hide belies its substantial size, better indicated by its resources in 1086: land for 7 ploughs, 25 acres of meadow, a mill worth 10s., a priest (and thus a church), 23 villans, 9 bordars, and a slave. Although it is relatively unusual to find so substantial a manor in the hands of an owner with no other landed property, there is nothing to connect Norton with any other manor belonging to an Agemund in 1066. Nor it is likely that the owner of Norton was the Agemund who was tenant in 1086 of a much smaller holding 25 miles away in Northamptonshire (Agemund 17).
