DB does not distinguish between the two later vills and parishes of Black Notley and White Notley, on the little river Brain in mid Essex, and Leofcild’s ½ hide and 22 acres cannot be assigned for certain to one or the other. It was one of seven holdings in the Notleys TRE, and one of three of medium size, between ½ hide and ¾ hide. The Notleys were only 10–12 miles from other estates in north Essex assigned to the name Leofcild, but other than proximity there are no reasons to connect them. Since there were clearly several landowners called Leofcild in the region, the holder of land at Notley was, on balance, probably a distinct individual.
