Emma is a Continental Germanic feminine name originating as a hypochoristic form of a compound name with *ermana ‘forceful’ as the first element (Forssner 1916: 69).
There are three entries in the PASE corpus: Emma 1 was an early seventh-century queen in Kent; Emma 2 was the wife of Æthelræd 32 and Cnut 3 who died in 1052; and Emma 3 was the wife of Earl Ralph 3, a post-Conquest instance.
