The name Wærhelm appears only once in DB, holding a small manor at Buckwell, in the North Downs 12 miles up the valley of the Great Stour from Canterbury. The riverine character of the estate is emphasized by its non-arable resources: a mill worth 40d., 10 acres of meadow, and an alder carr (alnetum), one of the handful recorded in DB; alder requires moving water to propagate its seeds and was used as a low-quality substitute when better wood was not available locally (Rackham 2010: 227, 289).
