Hwætmann 3 held a single manor in south Dorset, assessed at 2½ hides and worth £1 10s.; he was probably identical with the Bridport moneyer of that name who struck coins for both Edward the Confessor and William I.

The estate here called Wey was located somewhere on the little river Wey which reaches the sea at Weymouth in Dorset (Phill. Dors. introductory note 2). Hwætmann 3 was clearly not the same person as Hwætmann 2, many miles away in south Herefordshire, but he can be identified with some confidence as the moneyer Hwætmann who struck coins at Bridport for Edward the Confessor and William I (PASE: Hwætman 1; EMC), and perhaps at Bridport and Dorchester for Harold I and Harthacnut in the period 1036–42 (PASE: Hwætman 2–4). Bridport is 14 miles from the Wey valley, Dorchester only 4 miles, and the coincidence of such a rare name in close proximity is too great for them not to be connected. It is not certain that Hwætmann the moneyer survived as late as 1086; in any case his estate at Wey was in the hands of the Frenchman Fulcred at the time of the Domesday survey.
