Gerin 3 was a king’s thegn who held a small estate of 1 hide at Ningwood, overlooking the Solent towards the western end of the Isle of Wight, as a subtenant of King William (William 1) in 1086, when it was worth £7; the estate had been in King Edward 15’s farm TRE. It is likely that the DB entry for Ningwood duplicates part of the entry for Breamore, itself part of the royal manor at Rockbourne in west Hampshire but with a small outlier on the Isle of Wight, although the details of the two entries differ slightly and the TRW subtenant’s name is given as Ghervi in the relevant part of the Breamore entry. Taken at face value this spelling would represent the name Gerwig, but it is more likely that the final minims were confused in transcription and that the form should be *Gherin for Gerin (Munby 1982: 1,37; IoW 9,18 Notes).
The extremely rare personal name, the association with royal tenure and the relative proximity of the places involved render it conceivable that Gerin 3 was the same person as Gerin 2, who held quit-land from King Edward in Southampton TRE. However, a continental name would be less unusual after the Conquest and the lack of a definite link between the holdings and the intervening twenty years mean that it is more likely than not that Gerin 2 and Gerin 3 were different men.
