Although her estate lies in the midst of the estates held by Abbess Leofgifu 5 of Shaftesbury TRE, this proximity and the shared name are the only reasons for presuming that Leofgifu 12 was the same person as Leofgifu 5. Against this view are several considerations. Firstly, Leofgifu 12 is named explicitly in the Domesday entry whereas Leofgifu 5 is named only incidentally in Exon not Domesday Book, in which she appears anonymously under her office or institution. Secondly, Leofgifu 12’s estate was held by Aiulf the Chamberlain in 1086, which is not a succession matched by any of the Shaftesbury estates. Thirdly, there is no record of Shaftesbury Abbey ever having held or claimed an estate at Blandford, nor do Domesday Book and its satellites make any note of such a claim or dispute. It remains possible that Blandford might represent a private holding of Leofgifu 5, but the balance of probability is just in favour of Leofgifu 12 being a different person.
