The four instances of the name Aski in Domesday Book are located so far apart for such small estates that there can be no question of identifying any of them as the same man. The spelling Ascha clearly represents the name Aski and cannot be an error for Aschil.
Thornton is on the Mersey plain, set back from Liverpool Bay near the extensive mosses of the Alt valley. It was one of the larger manors in West Derby hundred, assessed at ½ hide, locally equivalent to 3 carucates, since Between Ribble and Mersey 6 carucates made a hide.
