The three small rural estates in Yorkshire entered with the name Brun were too far apart for it to be at all likely that they belonged to the same person.
Brun 23 owned the smaller of two manors at East Newton, in Ryedale 22 miles north of York. A larger manor of 4 carucates there had been given to the archbishop of York TRE (Yorks. 2N:5). The Yorkshire Summary lists only those two holdings (Yorks. BN:Ma15), but there was a third parcel of land in the vill, a berewick of Orm’s extensive manor of Hovingham (Yorks. 23N:24). The DB spelling Brune probably means that Brun 23 had the variant of the name conventionally spelled Bruna.
