Two of the houses in York which belonged in 1086 to the Yorkshire tenant-in-chief Osbern d’Arques were listed as Brun the priest’s and his mother’s. They may have been occupiers rather than owners, but Brun was clearly a sufficiently well known person for his name to identify the two properties concerned. His name was spelled differently from those of the TRE landowners in rural Yorkshire called Brun. He was most likely the priest of one of the numerous parish churches in the city.
