Ælling is a masculine Old English name in which an uncompounded name (Ælla, Ælli, or Alla) has been combined with the suffix –ing (von Feilitzen 1937: 146). The formal possibility that the base was a Scandinavian name (ON Áli or ODan Alli) is unlikely in view of the West Saxon provenance of Ælling. No other instance apart from one person in DB is currently recorded in PASE.
